BarCamp ShanghaiIf you're a geek, the place to be. If not, at least you can go there to play with Lego...

Pros

  • Lots of geeks
  • Fantastic food
  • Interesting method of organising "unconferences"BarCamp Shanghai
  • Lego

Cons

  • Lots of geeks

BarCamp ShanghaiIt's difficult to review BarCamp as a business event. In fact, it's hard to know what category it falls under: business? social? play? educational? If you're a self-professed geek*, you'll love it. If not, you may be a bit overwhelmed.

Since I fall into the former category I had a great time, meeting other geeks and talking tech. The seminars were good for the most part, the most notable of which involved learning programming methodologies through playing with Lego. Others included programming a Web 2.0 app, producing content for CMSs, "Everyone's an Artist" and navigating the Shanghai bus system (unfortunately not done during BarCamp itself, but available online)

BarCamp ShanghaiThe crowd, while completely geek, was incredibly diverse, with people flying in from all around China and other countries to be there. A lot of entrepreneurs dealing with cutting edge technologies showed up e as well as top-notch programmers even a few arty types.

For more information on what BarCamp's all about, check our interview with Crystal Williams, one of the "unorganisers."

BarCamp Shanghai* Note: The word "geek" is used here in a purely affectionate way. A lot of technically-oriented people (myself included) are self-professed geeks and quite proud of the fact. It's no longer considered an insult by those who actually are geeks
