Doesn't hold much of a candle to previous interchambers, due to lack of people, but not bad nonetheless. Hongqiao -- not the first place that springs to mind when you think of great places to hold mixers, for good reason. For most of us it's stuck in the middle of nowhere, in that No Mans Land between Zhongshan Park and God knows where else. You've got to wonder then, why was it here that the latest interchamber took place? To be fair, the Mariott Hongqiao is a nice enough venue with helpful staff and some of the best food I've had at a mixer, in both quality and quantity. Unfortunately the crowd was a little thin compared to previous interchambers, and I can't see any other reason but the location. I wouldn't even have shown up myself were I not already in Hongqiao at the time.Nonetheless, there was the usual crowd of us networking regulars in attendance, as well as a lot of new faces. Nationalities: Lots of locals, a few Germans, French and other Europeans. Quite a few Malaysians too. Americans were pretty thin on the ground. Industries: Lots of consultants and quite a few engineering companies. Otherwise pretty normal mix. Positions: Marketers, CEOs/Partners/GMs and Business Development folk were well-represented, as usual. Local/Expat*/Overseas Chinese: Many locals and "foreign" expats, not so many overseas Chinese -- a few Malaysians and a couple of Chinese origin born overseas. * Yep, separating expats and overseas Chinese isn't entirely great, since many fall into both camps. By expat, I mean foreigners who basically can't "blend in." If you can think of a better term (instead of expat) This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
