Nice view, shame about the (lack of) networking.

Pros:
  • Free entry
  • Good view
  • OK beer
Cons:
  • Little mingling and too much sitting down
  • Not a very diverse mix -- lots of interns, and almost completely German or Chinese
  • Barely publicised
Surprisingly, for an event organised by a business networking website, the OpenBC/Xing mixer just didn't press my buttons. The view was great and the beer was fine but the whole thing just didn't gel.

This was partially due to the layout -- there were far too many chairs on the balcony and even more in the dim interior of the Captain Hostel. Actually it seemed there were as many chairs as people -- not something that's really conducive to mingling.

The second issue was a not very diverse mix of people. Almost everyone I saw was either Chinese or German, generally in their 20s-30s and a lot of them interns. To some extent this reflects the audience of OpenBC -- were it a LinkedIn meetup it would probably have been just as American-dominated.

I was actually surprised at the number of people, considering the lack of publicity for the event. I hadn't seen it mentioned in any magazines or websites except for OpenBC itself. It's a testament to them that it's attracted this many people, though next time perhaps they should cast a wider net and try to bring in some other nationalities.

At least the weather was nice.
