Oriented Oct '06One of the better things about Oriented's Happy Hours is that they're at a different venue every time, giving a different vibe to each mixer. Unfortunately, this can also backfire, as it did last night.

Oriented Oct '06 Last night's happy hour was at City Diner on Tongren Road. Great as it is for a sit down and a bite to eat, like many restaurants, City Diner isn't really suited for networking events. Many people I spoke to just felt it was "wrong." I'd put it down to the wrong ambience, too much seating and not enough people.

That's not to say it was all bad though. The drinks were quite cheap, and like most Oriented events, there was a diverse range of people, with three or four familiar faces thrown in for good measure. While not one of the better Oriented Happy Hours, it still stacks up quite well against other networking events.

The Crowd

Nationalities: Quite a lot of locals, many Europeans, Americans, Canadians, a few Hong Kongnese, one Malaysian and one African

Local/Expat/Overseas Chinese: Many locals, lots of expats and a few overseas Chinese, including Canadian-born, American-born and Hong Kongnese

Oriented Oct '06Industries: Law, consulting, finance, tech, F&B, relocation, market research

Positions: Quite a few consultants and business development types, a couple of assistants and analysts, a few GMs and a couple of vice-presidents.

Ages: Mostly 20s-30s, some in their 40s.
